History of the Champagne Region
Minimize
History has not passed the Champagne Ardenne unnoticed. The region was subject to many a religious, military, political and cultural conflict. The contribution of the area to the history of France and Europe cannot be denied.

In the course of centuries the ideals of Christians, royalists and revolutionaries put distinctive marks on the Champagne-Ardennes and left interesting historic and architectonic mementos there. The area that was already inhabitated in pre historic times blossomed under the Gauls, the allies of the Romans.

Clovis, whose sovereignty was recognized by the church, was the first of a long series of kings who were crowned in Reims. With the Champagne fairs, commerce that started in the 11th century, acquires a platform that promotes every kind of exchange: religious orders establish themselves in the Champagne-Ardennes and hence Roman-Gallo architecture, courtly poetry and theology flourish. Gradually gothic art  with its characteristic sculpting and stained- glass windows develops. Religious wars, political skirmishes but also humanism and the renaissance of the 16th and 17th century have left their imprints on the region as many imposing edifices from that time will tell you.

The 18th century marks the emerging of trades, like textile and metal manufacturing as well as glassblowing. Until the signing of the armistice in Reims in 1945 history has dealt many a bloody blow , to start with the French Revolution and the subsequent wars during the 19th and the 20th century with the absolute low of the First World War.
Nowadays the Champagne Ardenne cherishes its rich heritage that visitors can admire in famous museums such as the Basilica and the Museum Saint Remi in Reims. There are also the Museum of contemporary art in Troyes, the Centre for books and posters in Chaumont and the Ardennes museum in Charleville-mézieres.

The different collections bear witness of a population that through the ages rendered its contribution to the development of a marvelous heritage. As a conscientious treasurer the region of Champagne-Ardenne preserves this heritage and thus enables everyone to learn about a number of most important pages concerning the history of France and Europe.
